Elden Ring Nightreign Review – Boss Breakdown & Weakness Guide

Having just beaten Elden Ring: Nightreign, here’s a raw, strategy-first review of the bosses that reshaped my expectations of the this play-through (which was about 80 hours of dying). Along the way, I wanted to highlight key weaknesses to help other readers and players prepare for these battles. Below is a breakdown of this journey with quick links to deeper guides and related content.

Overview and Outlook

First-off, this game was released in the month of May-2025, with my expectations that it would possibly be an extension of the original Elden Ring video game. That was certainly not the case as my team jumped into this new game and entirely new way of playing the Elden Ring series in general. In short — this first boss (and the others) got the best of me, and nearly took about 10-15 hours (some bosses more than 5 attempts).

Tricephalos (Gladius, Beast of Night) – Holy Weakness

That being said — this three‑headed nightmare leans into Holy vulnerability—every strike with a holy-imbued weapon staggers him, lowers his stats, and cuts massive chunks of health. Use faith casters or holy weapons (like Lance or Sacred Armaments) early to control the frenzy. Magic builds like Recluse or Revenant bring huge payoff here if their class is in your group. Bleed also helps, but holy is top-tier for this fight.

Holy damage helps immensely. Faith builds thrive here, especially if you’re able to stay nimble and stagger one head at a time. Bleed adds passive damage but won’t save you alone.

Gaping Jaw (Adel, Baron of Night) – Poison & Scarlet Rot

An unforgiving second boss with a tornado phase that punishes stragglers severely—its main weakness is poison and Scarlet Rot. Equip poison-affinity weapons or use greases. Reddit players suggest going full tank with pools of resistance—some builds even tanked multiple grabs without dropping. Raiders can interrupt the tornado with charged ultimate’s, preventing it entirely.

Rot and poison deal great damage over time. Let him rot while you dodge and run. Tanking this fight is almost impossible unless you’re specced into extreme resistance.

Sentient Pest (Gnoster, Wisdom of Night) – Fire Weakness

Early on, the Sentient Pest feels like a breeze—but the Everdark variant shifts fast. This duo boss is highly weak to fire. Bring fire greases or flame-affine weapons. Just as important: once Gnoster hits Everdark form, a healing fire butterfly appears—a nightmare to deal with. Timing is key.

Fire damage is crucial. Bring flame incantations, Fire Grease, or anything explosive to nuke the butterfly quickly and regain control.

Augur (Maris, Fathom of Night) – Lightning Weakness

A calm before the storm—clean attacks and lightning vulnerability make Augur a manageable reset after Punishing fights. Dodge incoming jellyfish and avoid the glowing nuke. Most builds can handle Maris reliably if they gather lightning spells or gear beforehand.

Lightning damage shreds through. Dual-wielding electrified blades or using lightning incantations works wonders.

Insider Tip from a God Slaying Pro: Attacking the jellyfish will cause them to shoot lasers back at it and you’ll beat this fight a lot faster if you take this route.

Equilibrious Beast (Libra, Creature of Night) – Madness Weakness

Your team’s nightmare incarnate: teleporting, madness-inflicting, instant combos. But they absorb madness damage effectively. Equip madness spells/incantations if you can find them. Perseverance and timing to interrupt long combos are key. Unlocking proper relics and leveling wisely makes the difference.

Madness damage (rare as it is) can disrupt its rhythm. We eventually succeeded using Holy weapons and heavy stuns, but it was a long, painful fight.

Darkdrift Knight (Fulghor, Champion of Nightglow) – Lightning Weakness

This centaur boss is lightning-shaped trouble. Weak to lightning damage like Augur, but more brutal commas, bigger projectile arcs, faster combo sequences—and punishes missing flasks hard ShacknewsPolygon. Upgrade those electrified weapons and dodge religiously.

Use lightning-infused weapons to get through his armor. It’s a matter of attrition—don’t get greedy, and stack damage negation.

Fissure in the Fog (Caligo, Miasma of Night) – Fire Weakness

This dragon throws frostbite-inducing Tail and wing swings, but survives poorly against fire damage. Farm for flame weapons, or fire greases. Remain mobile to avoid wide frost beams, and use healing items when necessary.

Fire spells or flame-enhanced weapons turn this into a clean win.

Night Aspect (Heolstor the Nightlord) – Holy Weakness, Rot Resistant

The final face-melter: Heolstor splits continents, swings massive swords, and feels like eldritch calamity. But holy weapons cut through, and Scarlet Rot is particularly effective. Layer damage negation, stay light on your feet, and thoroughly stack defenses before striking.

Holy weapons and rot damage shine here. Stay close to avoid sweeping blows, and use damage negation liberally. It’s not a short fight—but it is winnable.

The Review of God Slaying

So in the end – when it was all over, while I felt super relieved that I had beaten all the bosses — I still felt that good ol From Software sadness when completing their games. I just wanted to keep going — salying one god after the next with my giant rotten ax — or whatever the case may be on that Day or Night. My review for the god slaying Nightreign journey is a 9.

Still to Come: Everdark Bosses – Part 2

I haven’t finished the Everdark bosses yet—so keep an eye out for Part 2, where I’ll deep dive into those nightmare-tier fights. You’ll want builds stacked for poison, lightning, holy, and rot output, depending on the boss.

FAQs

Yes — Nightreign is significantly more challenging than the original Elden Ring. Bosses introduce new mechanics, multi-phase fights, and unpredictable elemental resistances. Many players report needing to unlearn old habits and rethink their builds entirely.

The main Nightreign storyline can take 15–25 hours, depending on your skill, exploration pace, and whether you tackle Everdark and side content. Completionists can easily push past 30–40 hours.

Here’s what helped me the most:
